Ocho Rios Beautification Project

PROJECT REPORT
Commencement of the Project:
Forty four students and 2 FAs from the Key Clubs of Mona High, Jamaica College, Merl Grove and New Providence Primary Builders Club met at the Car Park of Mona High School and were given instruction at 7 a.m. by Faculty Advisor Mr. Andrew Samuels of Mona High School Key Club and Faculty Advisor Ms. Natalie Mothersill of New Providence Primary School Builders Club.  Ms. Natalie Mothersill was named as the First Aid Response Person for the out of town Project with support from Merl Grove High School Key Club.  Two medical kits were provided by Merl Grove Key Club and one was placed on each bus. Transportation departed the Mona High School parking lot at 7:10 a.m. and arrived at Half Way Tree Portmore Bus Stop to pick up members of Calabar and Holy Childhood Key Clubs (4 persons). A total of $24, 000 was collected from the 48 persons on board. Supplies were purchased and the busses departed Half Way Tree for Ocho Rios at 7:50 a.m.  Bus entertainment by the way of music and movies were provided to relax the minds of the participants as well as Board Games and Hand held games were used to complete the experience. Behavior of participants was monitored by the Faculty Advisors A Samuels and N Mothersill. Upon reaching Ocho Rios, at 9:40 a.m. contact was made with the District Administrator of Key Club in Jamaica, Mr. Dennis Navara and the Lt. Governor of Division 4 of Key Club Andre Hamilton.  Other members joined us at the Ocho Rios Bus Park for the briefing exercise.  William Knibb High Key Clubbers (2) and LG Division 4 Andre Hamilton of Browns Town High Key Club.  The additional 6 members of Mona High School Key Club joined us in Ocho Rios. With now a total of 60 persons, DLG/District Administrator Dennis Navara provided Welcome Sentences on behalf of the St. Ann Chamber of Commerce (of which he is a Board Member), and expressed his delight to see the Key Clubbers who came out.  He reminded them of the pride attached to being Key Clubbers and that we must be proud to be apart of this exercise to clean the streets of the tourist town.  He also extended apologies for LG. of Kiwanis Division 24 of the EC&C District of Kiwanis who was unable to make the Project due to a Board Meeting.  Instructions on how to carry out the cleaning of the streets were given by FA Natalie Mothersill and the workers were split in two teams – Blue and Red Rangers.DLG/DA Dennis Navara realized the shortage of supplies went in searched of additional garbage bags that were well needed and disposable gloves which were provided by 11 a.m.
EXECUTION
At 10:30 a.m. the two teams departed from the Ocho Rios Bus Park.  Red Team was given to clean Main Street from the Clock Tower down to Island Village and Blue Team to clean the main street from the Police Station, pass Courts Ja. Limited, the Jerk Centre down to Island Village.  Bags of garbage were placed at strategic locations.  Key Clubbers were busy making the streets of Ocho Rios a cleaner place and several motorists flashed their lights and give thumbs up signals for the work being done.  To our amazement, several motorists pulled up beside Key Clubbers and hand over garbage that they had for disposals!  We were pleased to see that many citizens were using trash cans located along Main Street and this was pleasing to us. By 12:30 p.m. under the Mid Day sun shine, Key Clubbers were by now exhausted and started finding the shaded areas to clean along the road way heading out to St. Mary across from the Bus Park.  Small pockets of workers started gathering along the side walk and sat and catch their breath, while the bags of garbage collected were deposited in the areas identified. Having accounted for all workers on the project, Director Shannia recorded that 23 bags of garbage were collected and these were placed in the areas identified for storage until members of the NSWMA team came to remove these upon a telephone called made to Mr. Andrew Roach of the NSWMA. President Orville Weir (JC Key Club) and President Ever-Gaye Style of Merl Grove Key Club declared the project successful completed and commended the participants for work well done. At 1:30 p.m. members washed their hands and cleaned up after their work that was carried out.  The Key Clubbers then took an afternoon swim and play at the Island Village Beach Park, which provided discount for entrants.  Key Clubbers enjoyed swimming, but a competitive game of Beach Volley Ball was organized and Key Clubbers enjoyed frolicking in the sands on the beach. After a relaxing afternoon, key clubbers showered and left the complex at 5 p.m. and journeyed to KFC and Burger King and had lunch. At 6:10 p.m. the busses departed Ocho Rios for Kingston.  Stops were made along the way starting at Ferry Police Station, along Washington Boulevard, Molynes Road, Half-Way Tree, Hope Road, Liguanea and then onto Mona High School and Papine. By 8:10 p.m., the remaining students were picked up by their parents at Mona High School Parking Lot.  One minor incident required first aid attention.  Jodawna Johnson of Merl Grove Key Club received a cut on her finger.  Band aid and antiseptic was applied by Ms. Mothersill at 4 p.m.  The cut was not severe. We received reports as of Saturday July 26, 2008 10 p.m. that all participants arrived home safely.
Special commendations must be made of LG Andre Hamilton of the Jamaica District Board of Key Club who really dug into the project and displayed a high sense of pride as he cleaned a town in his parish.  To DLG/DA Dennis Navara for coming to the project and providing words of encouragement, the supplies and being apart of the project.  To Ms. Natalie Mothersill of New Providence Primary School Builders Club for her motherly support during the project.  Thanks to the Bus Drivers provided by Mr. Collins attached to JUTA for their services provided to give safe transportation.  Thanks also to the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), National Works Agency (NWA) and the St. Ann Parish Council for their support given on this project.  We would also like to express our sincere thanks to the parents/guardians of those participants who were allowed to be apart of the project.

Meet President Sabrina Evans (2006/07 and 2007/08) who is being given a make over by her Key Clubbers.  Key Clubbers learning from their Faculty Advisor have a thing to restyle the hair styles of students, most times not to their liking.  President Sabrina serves in the capacity as the CEO and head of the Disciplinary Committee.  She has the portfolio to establish Club alliances and works closely to the planning of our Featured Projects.

1st Vice President Tiffany Johnson.  Tiffany is serving in this capacity for the 2nd consecutive year where she is assigned the portfolio of Club Administration and K-Family Relations.  Hard at work she is at many projects, and preside over Board of Directors Meeting.  Again, each person have their short comings which she has never failed to expressed.  Tiffany is known for her committed devotion to her Board duties and her service to the Club has been proven to be vital.
Meet 2nd Vice President Renae Hunter.  Renae is the Head Girl of the School's Student Body and works tirelessly to display go

od leadership qualities to the over  58 Prefects given to her.  She has the portfolio of Discipline and Club Administration.  Renae's silent nature has earned her the respect on critical Board matters as when she speaks, the Club officers takes her advice.  Renae is also a dynamic singer who never fails to hit the right note with her awesome voice.  Renae has served in this capacity for 2 years.
3rd Vice President - Alanzo Small.  By his name, there is nothing small about this member as his service record is impressive.  Alanzo joined the Club in November 2007 and within one month, was appointed a Chairperson.  Within 2 months, a Director in charge of Bulletin and Public Relations (Club Editor).  Attending his first DCON in 2008, Alanzo saw the bigger picture to serve.  Currently, he serves as with the portfolio of Bulletin and External Communications, allowing him to ensure that Club activities are properly publicised and that any communication from other Clubs are given our attention.  Alanzo worked very closely on the Portland Experience Project, New Providence Labour Day Project, Ocho Rios Environmental Beautification Project and Project 100: Caring for a friend.  Alanzo is the closest working Key Club officer to the Faculty Advisor besides the President, and on many times is asked to hand Club Business that is of a sensitive nature.

Tawana attends many interclubbing and is a famous face at projects and Builders Club Meeting.  Tawana will remain a member of the Board in the 2009/10 year, as she continues to work on her leadership and communication styles.

Distinguished Faculty Advisor Andrew Samuels.  Mr. Samuels have been accredited with this distinction at the 2008 23rd Key Club District Convention by the Board.  His passion to serve and lead others have been an inspiration to the entire Key Club movmement not only in our school, but across the entire Jamaica District.  Mr. Samuels has the portfolio of supervising Club operations, while providing training and mentoring of the Key Clubbers.  Mr. Samuels though in the background sometimes in some activities, gets the entire respect of the members and is soughted on many instances when Board agreements cannot be settled.  Mr. Samuels oversees the administering of discipline with other members of the Disciplinary Council and is just an awesome person who we have come to learn to work with.
